Stress, The Curse of Modern Living, Is Inevitable

Stress and anxiety stem from a delicate combination of biological, genetic, and environmental factors.

Besides this, the demands of modern life and our less-than-perfect living and working conditions have increased our individual stress levels. Just look round! Stressors are all around us, noise, artificial lights, gadgets, long work and commute hours, demands of family, and what not! Prolonged and untreated stress can lead to depression.

Alongside, the current social and global conditions have also maximized our collective stress levels: the pandemic, inflation, the rising price of food and fuel, shortages, the global uncertainty, etc., are all factors contributing significantly to our stress levels.

For me, depression and anxiety run in the family. So, I have sought intervention early in life in terms of therapy, counseling and maintaining a mindful living style. Lighting stress relief scented candles are just one of the many mindful practices I undertake to create a calm and serene life for myself and my loved ones.

The Need to Relax and Unwind is Important

Whether we are working from home or returning from work after a hard day, whether we are a stay-at-home parent, a caregiver or a teen living at home, or we are homebound elderlies, we all need to create a calming, relaxing space for ourselves and for those living with us.

I feel that relaxation is a personal need and individual experience. Everyone has one special thing, a tip, ritual, tool, outlet that can help them relax. Some read, listen to music or watch TV, cook, talk with their friends, others seek relief in mindful practices like yoga, meditation. For some one like me, who loves fragrances, aromatherapy is a highly relaxing experience. I have friends and family members who share the same sentiments and experiences when it comes to scented candles and in particular stress relief candles.

Ways Stress Relief Candles Work

Aromatherapy is part of centuries’ old cultural traditions and alternative or holistic health practices. It is gaining popularity lately due to its potential to release stress, improve sleep quality and purify the air around the house and much more. Here are some of the ways stress relief candles work for me:

Creating a Calm Ambience Right away through Stress Relief Candles

When I have a stressful day, the first thing I do when reaching home is to light a scented candle in the hallway. I then switch on my electric kettle for coffee. By the time I have refreshed myself up, my apartment feels warm, welcoming and homely. Alongside, my coffee is ready to be savored. The warm glow of the candle stops the chatter in my anxious mind and push the worries of the day aside. It helps me reclaim my calm and peace.

Luckily, my partner understands and shares my passion! At times, when he is able to reach home before me, he lights my favorite candle for me. You can say that coming back to a scented candle at home is a feeling that I look forward to very much.

Creating the Desired Vibe Effortlessly

Scented candles can instantly change the vibe or mood of a room. You want to create a welcoming ambience for your guests or seduce your partner? The right scented candle can help you set the desired tone and mood.

Personally, I am doing yoga or meditating in the evening, reading, journaling, taking a bath or prepping my home for company, lighting a scented candle is a cherished habit that helps me create the right vibe almost effortlessly. I really love it when a guest walks in and responds to the scent and glow of a scented candle and inquires me about it.

Cleansing and Purifying the Air

Likewise, stress relief candles also help me cleanse the air of my living space and get rid of stale air, bad odors through lighting a gorgeous smelling citrus or lemon scented candles. I have found Orange Lemon Splash from Smoke Odor Exterminator candle to be very effective for masking the unpleasant and (inevitable) smell from litter and all the cooking we do. Similarly, I cannot get enough of the lime scented Limelight candle from Tyler Candles.

One thing I would specifically mention is that throughout COVID-19 and the subsequent shelter-in-place phases, my partner and I ended up burning lots of eucalyptus or sage scented candles to cleanse and purify the air. I know that the practice didn’t have any scientific worth, but it did help us lower our stress and paranoia levels significantly. I would swear by Bath & Body Work’s Eucalyptus + Tea and Eucalyptus + Spearmint Stress Relief Candle anytime.

Sparking the 5 Senses and Imagination
Scented candles serenade the 5 senses. They are beautiful and vibrant to look at and touch. The fragrances are heavenly and trigger varied feelings in us: calmness, excitement, joy, pleasure, relief from stress and pain. The sensations and memories the scents evoke are powerful, transient and mysterious, so stress relief candles can act like a time machine. The crackle of the wick is exciting and the shadows casted by flame are a mysterious play of light and shadow.

Migraine Relief from Aromatherapy

I suffer from chronic migraines that rear their ugly head whenever I am stressed, overworked, near my periods or have eaten something that doesn’t agree with me. Luckily, over the years, I have discovered that aromatherapy does make a difference. Lying down in a darkened, quiet room, a cold compress and a lesser known scented candle called Mystix London’s Migraine and Stress Relief candle are the few things that help me ride through the spasm.

Lower Stress Means Better Sleep Quality

A major reason behind sleep disturbances and insomnia are the increased and prolonged use of artificial lights and screen. The blue light of the smartphone is a particular culprit in my case. Hence, sleep candles have helped me enhance my sleep hygiene. Hence, the warm glow created by a candle’s flame lowers the cortisol level, gives the weary eyes a welcome break from the gadget’s screens, and makes the body sleepy.

Furthermore, scented candles, made from specific essential oils, can act as effective sleep aids. Lavender is on top of everyone’s list due to its well-known therapeutic properties. But there are Bergamot, Neroli, Rose, Mandarin, Rose, Jasmine, Chamomile, Sandalwood, Ylang Ylang, Geranium, and Sweet Orange essential oil based scented candles that are very effective for sleep issues.

How to Sleep Candles Work

Once the scented candles start releasing their scent, they trigger your limbic system. Once the body is relaxed, it is easier for it to transition among the  Light, Slow Wave Sleep (SWS) or deep sleep, Non-REM and REM, and Wake mode of sleep. Hence, the result is a calmer, deeper sleep at night and waking up refreshed the next morning.

Which Sleep Candles Lower My Stress and Help Me Sleep Better

My top most recommendation for insomnia is, of course, Pecksniff’s England Aromatherapy Deep Sleep, Lavender and Sage scented Candle. This is a premium candle that comes in a simple apothecary grade jar promising therapeutic grade lavender and sage fragrance. For those who find sage overwhelming and are looking for mild and flowery scents, Scentered’s Sleep Well scented candle is highly recommended. It contains Palmarosa, Lavender, Chamomile and Ylang Ylang.

Sleep issues can be complex and can stem from other health issues. For instance, my mother suffers from Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) and a Vitamin B and folate supplement and Pecksniff’s scented candle is what give her relief. She is able to sleep a relatively better and calmer sleep.

Furthermore, a friend of mine has a chronic sinusitis problem that makes him prone to snoring whenever he is overly tired. An aromatherapist recommended him essential oil comprising Geranium, and he has indeed found Geranium to be helpful. He uses essential oil as well as a scented candle brand comprising Geranium. So, if you or someone you know is suffering from the said health issues, these are a few recommendations worth trying.
