Today, I will share something personal with you! I suffer from high levels of stress and anxiety due to the nature of my work. Besides, medication, I do feel that stress relief candles help me manage my anxiety levels. Today, I would like to share my experiences.

For me, depression and anxiety run in the family. So, I have sought intervention early in life in terms of therapy, counseling and maintaining a mindful living style. Lighting stress relief scented candles are just one of the many mindful practices I undertake to create a calm and serene life for myself and my loved ones.
The Need to Relax and Unwind is Important
Whether we are working from home or returning from work after a hard day, whether we are a stay-at-home parent, a caregiver or a teen living at home, or we are homebound elderlies, we all need to create a calming, relaxing space for ourselves and for those living with us.
I feel that relaxation is a personal need and individual experience. Everyone has one special thing, a tip, ritual, tool, outlet that can help them relax. One thing I would specifically mention is that throughout COVID-19 and the subsequent shelter-in-place phases, my partner and I ended up burning lots of eucalyptus or sage scented candles to cleanse and purify the air. I know that the practice didn’t have any scientific worth, but it did help us lower our stress and paranoia levels significantly. Scented candles serenade the 5 senses. They are beautiful and vibrant to look at and touch. The fragrances are heavenly and trigger varied feelings in us: calmness, excitement, joy, pleasure, relief from stress and pain. The sensations and memories the scents evoke are powerful, transient and mysterious, so stress relief candles can act like a time machine. The crackle of the wick is exciting and the shadows casted by flame are a mysterious play of light and shadow.

I suffer from chronic migraines that rear their ugly head whenever I am stressed, overworked, near my periods or have eaten something that doesn’t agree with me. A major reason behind sleep disturbances and insomnia are the increased and prolonged use of artificial lights and screen. The blue light of the smartphone is a particular culprit in my case. Hence, sleep candles have helped me enhance my sleep hygiene. Hence, the warm glow created by a candle’s flame lowers the cortisol level, gives the weary eyes a welcome break from the gadget’s screens, and makes the body sleepy.

Once the scented candles start releasing their scent, they trigger your limbic system. Once the body is relaxed, it is easier for it to transition among the Light, Slow Wave Sleep (SWS) or deep sleep, Non-REM and REM, and Wake mode of sleep. Sleep issues can be complex and can stem from other health issues. For instance, my mother suffers from Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) and a Vitamin B and folate supplement and Pecksniff’s scented candle is what give her relief. She is able to sleep a relatively better and calmer sleep.
